| Geisinger Health Systems
Buckhorn Office Building, Buckhorn, PA |
 |
Geisinger, one of the nation's largest integrated health services organizations, has become a national example of providing exceptional, affordable healthcare.
Borton-Lawson helped Geisinger align with their organizational and project goals by designing an affordable, green, 94,000 SF office facility employing 490 people in Buckhorn, Pennsylvania. The building is welcoming, user-friendly, and clearly illustrates Geisinger's fiscal and environmental responsibility.
Our design team was able to maximize sustainable building technologies while minimizing cost by incorporating innovative measures into the design like simple, repetitive steel design that improved the efficiency cost of the steel fabrication and erection, internal planning and solar orientation of the building for maximum efficiency of mechanical systems, and an attractive, well-insulated facade.

In the highly competitive elder care market, Borton-Lawson appreciated the value of working in a design/build relationship with Senior Health Solutions.
Borton-Lawson worked closely with Senior Health Care and the developer in designing a 90-bed skilled-care facility that complements the developer's adjacent facilities in Scranton and Dunmore. Architectural design services included code review (PA Uniform Construction Code including ANSI for accessibility), plans, sections and elevations, casework detailing for social (dayroom, dining, etc.) conference, break room, nurses area and med rooms, coordination of building engineering disciplines, and building footprint with in-house civil/site design for grading and drainage utilities.
Structural design elements included:
- Conventional spread footing and foundation system
- Design of building framing
- Design of roof framing
- Evaluate roof structure for adequacy of support for proposed packaged HVAC unit; prepare details and notes for required structural modifications
Heating and cooling load calculations were determined and an air-based heating/cooling system was designed, including the exhaust system. New gas-fired, packaged, rooftop, HVAC equipment was designed to provide summer cooling and ventilation and winter ventilation, with space heating provided by the existing steam system. Coordination was made with water, sanitary and natural gas utility companies. New domestic water supply, sanitary drainage and fire protection sprinkler systems were designed. Corner Post Federal Credit Union Renovations and Upgrades
Wilkes-Barre, PA
The Corner Post Federal Credit Union contracted with Borton-Lawson to provide architectural and engineering services for a renovation to their South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre location.
Borton-Lawson's design optimized the potential of the building and included realignment of exit points, entrances, and walk-in and drive-up locations. Borton-Lawson also planned for future functionality, taking into account Wilkes-Barre City's plans for a street expansion through the adjacent property.
Maintaining day-to-day operations, security and safe member access in and out of the building were main priorities for the client during construction. Borton-Lawson's phasing plan made sure operations were not interrupted throughout the renovation period and worked hand-in-hand with the Credit Union owners and Twin City Builders.
Corner Post and Borton-Lawson also saw the renovation as an opportunity to make the building a better reflection of the Credit Union's image. As it had become a fixture in downtown Wilkes-Barre, the team selected exterior materials to exhibit the institution's strength and longevity. Traditional materials such as pre-cast concrete, sandstone, steel and metal panels were arranged in a dynamic, progressive manner.
Borton-Lawson's frequent communication, active involvement and open availability were key elements in contributing to the project's success and the client's satisfaction.

| Mansfield University (Open-end), Mansfield, PA |
 |
Mansfield University is a rural, 174-acre college campus, that in recent years has experienced overcrowding of its facilities. This issue, paired with the age of its buildings, has led to the University seeking professional design solutions to their facility and maintenance problems.
Borton-Lawson was selected from over 40 professional firms to provide architectural and engineering services for a one-year period by means of an open-end contract. The nature of services requested by the University included architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, civil, surveying and landscape. This broad range of professional services gave the University the maximum flexibility for their varied facility and maintenance needs.
Borton-Lawson's ability to provide all of these services in-house made it an ideal partner in the University's improvement plans. During the course of one year, Borton-Lawson designed new roofs for two of Mansfield's major buildings — a residence hall and the 2,000-seat Decker Gymnasium. Since part of the work was done during the school year, Borton-Lawson coordinated closely with students, residence life and faculty to be sure schedules were not interrupted during construction.
